Flashes: A Bluesky-Powered Instagram Alternative Makes Its Public Debut

Flashes, a fresh Instagram-like photo-sharing app powered by the Bluesky network, has gone live on the App Store, racking up almost 30,000 downloads in its first 24 hours. Berlin-based creator Sebastian Vogelsang built Flashes on top of Bluesky's decentralized AT Protocol, enabling smooth content sharing within the larger Bluesky universe.

Flashes is different from Instagram in terms of user control and personalization. Users are allowed to upload a maximum of four images or videos (maximum one minute in length) for each post and access Bluesky's 50,000+ custom feeds to tailor their content experience. Flashes also includes dedicated built-in feeds for popular and latest posts.

Targeting creatives and photographers, Flashes has a "Portfolio Mode," which allows users to edit their profiles and showcase specific images for visitors. There are also in-app photo filters for instant post-editing, just like Instagram.

Flashes is also embracing community content, starting with artist-curated feeds, beginning with the Blacksky community—a community focused on creating tools and services for Black users on Bluesky.

With 40,500 downloads by Thursday, Flashes is picking up pace, and Vogelsang welcomes investor opportunities to further develop the platform. As a decentralized option to mainstream social media, Flashes is focused on delivering a new, user-centric method of photo sharing in the changing digital world.

Flashes: A Decentralized Photo-Sharing App Built For Bluesky Users

Good news for fans of open-source social platforms! Bluesky, the decentralized social media network powered by the AT Protocol, is getting its own photo-sharing app, Flashes, designed to offer an alternative to Meta's Instagram. Developed by Berlin-based Sebastian Vogelsang, Flashes is set to cater to Bluesky's growing user base while tapping into the rising demand for decentralized social media options.

A New Decentralized Era of Photo Sharing

Flashes uses the same tech as Bluesky and expand upon Vogelsang's previous app, Skeets, which was successful by focusing on accessibility and functionality for iPad users. With more than 27.5 million users on Bluesky, this new app seeks to attract an even wider audience, particularly those who are visually oriented but not "Twitter-style" users.

Beyond that, it's not even just an Instagram replica but more like an application built to enhance Bluesky by filtering the timeline to contain more photos and videos. In this sense, it provides the means of a smooth interconnectivity for all the interactions in a single feed where Flashes posts will appear in Bluesky, as well.

Launch Features

Flashes features available upon release will include the following:

  • Photo posts: Posts may include four photos.
  • Video uploads: Video up to a minute.
  • Cross-platform compatibility: Posts and comments sync with Bluesky.
  • Direct messaging: Leverages the DM feature already in existence on Bluesky

Flashes repurpose most of Skeets' code so that it gets developed faster and remains compatible. Future plans also involve adding metadata for Flashes posts so that all photo-heavy posts do not flood the main Bluesky feed.

More Than an Instagram Alternative

Though Flashes may seem more like Instagram, Vogelsang insists that the app has a focus all to itself. The app gives its users an avenue to discover Bluesky from a visual point of view but benefits from the decentralized technology.

"I liked the idea of having one base social graph and different apps picking what they want to display," Vogelsang told TechCrunch.

By developing applications such as Flashes, Vogelsang would envision a future where users access a single, unified social graph through specialized apps based on their individual preferences.

The Road Ahead

Flashes will initially be free, but premium features like bookmarks, drafts, and enhanced notifications will require a subscription. Vogelsang has planned to combine subscription models throughout Flashes and Skeets so users will not pay for the same set of premium tools twice.

Apart from Flashes, the Blue Screen will be another video-only app developed. This is because it further complements the decentralized media-sharing ecosystem of Bluesky.

Release Date

Flashes is scheduled for release in the coming weeks with a TestFlight beta version leading to its eventual release. Individuals interested in this app can wait for updates via Flashes on Bluesky.

Conclusion

Flashes is a giant leap forward in the decentralized social media landscape, offering users of Bluesky a platform specifically designed for photo and video sharing. With seamless integration, user-friendly features, and a commitment to accessibility, Flashes is poised to attract both current Bluesky users and newcomers looking for alternatives to traditional social media platforms.
