Microsoft is bringing back its controversial Windows Recall feature, set to be available exclusively to testers in the Windows Insider Program starting in October 2024. The tech giant announced the feature's return on its official blog, indicating that it will eventually roll out to all Copilot Plus PCs, though no specific release date has been provided.Windows Recall first made headlines in May when it sparked widespread backlash due to privacy concerns. The feature uses artificial intelligence to automatically capture screenshots of everything a user does on a Windows 11 computer, creating a detailed record of their activities. Microsoft pitched the tool as a way to help users recover lost files or revisit past conversations. However, many were skeptical about the company’s assurances regarding data security, given its track record. Cybersecurity expert Alexander Hagenah even demonstrated how easily malware could compromise data stored in the Recall repository. The uproar led Microsoft to pull the feature shortly after its initial announcement.In June, Microsoft outlined plans to address these concerns with several key updates. Most notably, users will be able to opt out of Windows Recall, and the feature will be "off by default." Additionally, users will need to enroll in Windows Hello before activating the tool, and Microsoft is adding extra layers of protection. According to the company, screenshots will only be decrypted and accessible after user authentication. The updated version will also include a pinned Recall window on the taskbar, allowing users to manage and delete saved images at any time.While these updates aim to alleviate privacy fears, there are still uncertainties surrounding the relaunch. Microsoft has not clarified whether the version available to testers will include all the promised changes. Given the extended delay, which has stretched from weeks into months, the feature's official release could be pushed into 2025 if further adjustments are needed.The Windows Recall feature remains a significant point of concern, especially regarding user privacy and data security. As the Windows Insider Program tests typically span several weeks to months, much remains to be seen about the final version that will eventually be made available to the public.
